A Visit to LGBT+ Denmark

Last week, our team took a working trip to Copenhagen, where we visited LGBT+ Denmark—Denmark’s oldest queer rights organization. This was a very important meeting for us, as Denmark has one of the most progressive histories in Europe when it comes to the rights of trans people and queer people. Denmark was the first European country to allow legal recognition of gender based on self-identification, as well as the first in the world to officially remove trans identity from the list of mental disorders. We are currently implementing a joint project in partnership with LGBT+ Denmark to create an online platform dedicated to trans issues. Our goal is to bring together in one place the most important and reliable information for trans people and their allies: from basic explanations and support resources to practical materials and community stories. During the trip, we gained a deeper understanding of how LGBT+ Denmark operates today, learned about their key areas of focus, and shared experiences regarding support for trans people. In addition, we had the opportunity to meet with representatives of the local trans community —specifically with the organization @institutfortransglaede—and also visited the queer bookstore @the.pond.cph. These were warm and inspiring conversations about community, visibility, culture, and the importance of spaces where trans people can feel safe.
