On July 14, the world observes International Non-Binary Day—a day to raise awareness of the non-binary community and to highlight its rights and needs.

Non-binary identity refers to a gender identity and human experience that is not limited solely to the categories of “man” or “woman.” Today, non-binary people in Ukraine, along with others, are defending the country, working, studying, and participating in society, yet they remain legally invisible.

In Ukraine, there is no legal recognition of non-binary identity, nor is it possible to officially record a corresponding gender marker in official documents. The non-binary community also needs its experiences to be taken into account in various areas of life—including healthcare, education, employment, the military, and when accessing government services.

At the same time, non-binary identity does not have a “correct” appearance. Non-binary people are not required to look androgynous, choose certain clothes or hairstyles, or prove their identity in any other way.

On International Non-Binary Persons Day, we support both those who openly talk about their identity and those who, for various reasons, have not come out. A person’s identity is no less meaningful simply because others may or may not know about it.

The right of non-binary persons to a dignified and safe life, equal treatment, and legal protection must be ensured.
